Science

Mrs Hardy is the Science lead at Rosehill. If you have any questions about the Science curriculum, please contact her through the school office.

"A high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes" (National Curriculum 2014)

Science at Rosehill

Science for children at Rosehill Infants School means exploring, discovering and investigating. We aim to provide the children with a scientific knowledge base whilst asking questions, making predictions and then testing them in order to discover more about the world around them. Our curriculum is based on Cornerstones projects, tailored to the needs and interests of our children. This planning framework enables us to cover the National Curriculum objectives and embed cross-curricular skills.

Children at Rosehill have a natural curiosity  and we build on this through providing exciting and engaging lessons. These activities help children gather the experience they need to understand the world in which we live. Children engage in practical investigations linked to our topic work with lots of 'hands-on' activities. They develop the skills of observing and recording information accurately. The principles of prediction and fair testing are also introduced. Pupils work together to explore, investigate and reason, in a collaborative and inclusive environment. We are very fortunate to have the grounds of Arboretum Park including a pond, gardening area and brand new Forest Schools provision to enrich our studies.

Children are encouraged to appreciate and protect the environment and explore the wonder of the world around us.

Useful Science websites for children to access from home, some of the content in these websites is also used by staff at the school.

The children are provided with many enrichment opportunities as we believe they benefit immensely from these.  They have enjoyed visits from theatre groups who teach science through mini productions such as finding out about space and the planets. The children have also enjoyed learning science from beyond the school grounds, with trips to the farm and the local park. We also have excellent links with local industry and STEM projects. See below for pictures!

STEM day! Our Future Derby came to school to teach Year 1 about planning and building high speed railways. We built our own and spoke to a lady who works for Network Rail.
